Bathroom floor tile

For a standard bathroom floor between 100 and 200 square feet, most homeowners in our area pay between $900 and $2,500 in installation labor and materials. The main variables are tile size (larger format tiles take more skill to set level), whether floor leveling compound is needed, and how complex the layout is. A straight 12×12 grid is on the lower end; a diagonal or offset pattern adds time and cost.

Shower walls and tub surrounds

Shower tile is more involved than floor tile and more important to do right. Expect to pay $2,000 to $5,000 for shower wall installation, depending on size and tile choice. This should always include a proper waterproofing system (like Schluter Kerdi or Wedi board). If a contractor gives you a quote that doesn’t mention waterproofing, that’s a red flag, a failed shower pan can cost far more to fix later than the money saved upfront.

Walk-in showers (no tub)

Walk-in showers are the most variable project in terms of cost. A smaller walk-in with standard porcelain tile might come in around $3,500–4,500. A larger shower with large-format 24×48 tile, a niche, a built-in bench, and a linear drain can easily reach $8,000–9,000+. This is also the project type that adds the most perceived value to your home in Northeast Florida’s competitive real estate market.

Full bathroom tile remodel (floor + shower)

This is our most common full-scope project and the one where getting a detailed, itemized quote matters most.

If you just need a small floor tiled like a powder room, laundry room, or a small half bath then installation typically runs $500 to $1,200. It’s a lower-cost entry point, and it’s a great way to see what it’s like to work with a tile crew before committing to a larger project.

What drives the price up (and what keeps it down)

If you’ve gotten wildly different quotes from different contractors, here’s why that happens , and what you’re actually comparing.

•       Tile format and size: Large format tiles (24×48, 32×32) require more precision to set level, more cuts, and more skill. They cost more to install than standard 12×12 tile.

•       Layout complexity: A straight horizontal layout is the baseline. Diagonal patterns, herringbone, and custom mosaic work all add time and labor cost.

•       Waterproofing system: Any shower must be waterproofed. Quality systems (Schluter, Wedi, Mapei) add cost but cutting this corner causes leaks, mold, and structural damage. It is never optional.

•       Subfloor or wall prep: Florida homes on slab foundations often need leveling compound. Wood subfloors may need additional prep or reinforcement before tile can go down.

•       Demo and removal: Tearing out old tile, cement board, and adhesive is a full half-day job. Make sure your quote specifies whether demo is included.

•       Tile quality and material: Ceramic is the entry point. Porcelain is denser, more durable, and better suited to Florida’s humidity. Natural stone (marble, travertine) is beautiful and commands premium installation rates.

•       Project access and jobsite conditions: Tight spaces, high ceilings, or limited access to a bathroom can add time to any project.

What to look for when hiring a tile contractor in Northeast Florida

•       Can they show real photos of their completed work? Stock photos are easy to post. Ask for actual job photos, ideally from projects similar to yours.
